Surgical Rehabilitation

Prepare Well, Recover Faster

Physiotherapy plays a vital role on both sides of an operation. Pre-operative physiotherapy ("prehab") builds strength, flexibility and fitness before surgery, so your body is better prepared and bounces back sooner. Post-operative physiotherapy then restores movement, strength and confidence step by step, so you get the full benefit of your surgery.

At New Life Physiotherapy Clinic, Dr. Y. Abhilash (PT) follows your surgeon's protocol closely and tailors every stage to your operation, pain level and goals — from your first steps after surgery to returning to work, sport and everyday life.

  • Follows your surgeon's protocol
  • Faster, safer recovery
  • Less pain and stiffness
  • Back to daily life sooner

Prehab Strengthening

Targeted exercises before surgery to build the muscles around the joint, which is linked to quicker recovery afterwards.

Pre-Surgery Education

We teach you the exercises, walker or crutch use and home safety tips you will need, so you know what to expect.

Pain & Swelling Control

Ice, elevation, gentle movement, taping and laser therapy to ease post-operative pain and swelling.

Breathing & Circulation

Breathing exercises and ankle pumps after surgery to protect your lungs and keep blood flowing in the legs.

Range of Motion Recovery

Guided stretching and joint mobilisation to regain bending and straightening and prevent stiffness.

Progressive Strengthening

Exercises that start gently and progress safely to rebuild the strength lost before and after surgery.

Walking & Balance Training

Gait training from walker to stick to walking freely, with balance work to prevent falls.

Scar & Soft Tissue Care

Gentle scar mobilisation and soft tissue work once healed, to keep the skin and muscles flexible.

FAQs

Surgical Rehab Questions Answered

Pre-operative physiotherapy (prehab) strengthens the muscles around the joint, improves flexibility and teaches you the exercises you will need afterwards. Patients who are stronger before surgery usually recover faster and more smoothly.

Usually as soon as your surgeon allows — often within the first few days for joint replacements and many orthopaedic operations. Starting early helps prevent stiffness and weakness. We always follow your surgeon's instructions.

Some discomfort is normal as you start moving again, but it should be manageable. We control pain and swelling first and progress exercises at a pace your body can handle.

Most people need around 6–12 weeks of physiotherapy to regain good movement, strength and walking, with continued home exercises after that. The exact time depends on your health and fitness before surgery.

Please bring your discharge summary, operation notes, X-rays or scans, and any instructions from your surgeon. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the operated area.

Yes. Your rehabilitation follows your surgeon's protocol and restrictions, and we can share progress updates with your surgeon if needed.
